About Henna:  Henna also known as Lawsania Inermis is a flowering plant used since bronze age to dye skin, hair and nails.  (see illustration of the plant below):

Henna's coloring properties are due to lawsone, a burgundy organic compound, that has an affinity for bonding with protein.  Lawsone is primarily concentrated in the leaves of the plant.  Henna is commonly traded as a powder made by drying, milling and sifting the leaves. The dry powder is mixed with lemon juice, strong tea, and essential oils such as tea tree, eucalyptus, cajeput, or lavender to make a preparation with toothpaste-like consistency.  The henna mix must rest for 6 to 24 hours before use, to release the lawsone from the leaf matter.  Once the paste is ready for use, it is applied with many traditional and innovative tools, including resist, a cone, syringe, Jac bottle or fingers.  Neha prefers to use the applicator called cone, similar to cake decorating bags.  A light stain may be achieved within minutes, the longer the paste is left on the skin, the stronger the stain will be.  For the best result, one must avoid water and keep henna for good few hours.  Henna stains are orange soon after application, but darkens over the following three days to a reddish brown.  Organic Henna stain lasts anywhere from a week to 10 or 15 days depending on the area applied.

In several parts of the world, Henna is traditionally used for various festivals and celebrations.  Henna is
regarded as having "Barakat," blessings, and is applied for luck as well as joy and beauty.  Brides typically have henna all over their hands and feet with the most complex patterns.  Henna parties are very common for weddings to offer simple henna for the guests.

Since many hollywood celebrities have done their music videos and events showing off their henna body art, it has become very popular in west.
